Rangers racked up their biggest European win for four years, beating Poland's Amica Wronki 5-0 in the UEFA Cup's new group stage. By Robin Marais
Amica Wronki, currently Poland's third best side, were comprehensively beaten thanks to goals from Peter Lovenkrands, Nacho Novo, Fernando Ricksen, Shota Arveladze and Steven Thompson.
Not since Sturm Graz were thrashed by the same scoreline at Ibrox in the Champions League in the autumn of 2000 have Rangers fans enjoyed so many goals against continental opposition.
It was also their seventh straight win in all competitions - and goalkeeper Stefan Klos's seventh successive clean sheet.
Manager Alex McLeish, whose job had been in jeopardy just a month ago, made two changes from the side that had won 2-0 at Motherwell on Sunday with Thompson and Novo making way for Lovenkrands and Arveladze.
Lovenkrands had missed that win for personal reasons but this was also only his second start since August as his erratic form had made him unreliable in the big games.
He showed nothing but a killer instinct, however, when a chance came his way in the 17th minute as he drilled a low shot past goalkeeper Arkadiusz Malarz.
Arveladze had made it possible with a direct thrust into the heart of the Wronki defence and, as the challenges came in, the ball ended up squirting across to the left where Lovenkrands had both the time and space to make sure Rangers' best opportunity of the half was not wasted.
The home side had already squandered two good opportunities by this point, with both Mateusz Bartczak and Jacek Dembinski hitting the side-netting when they should have at least forced Klos into making a save.
Bartczak's chance had arrived in the second minute when captain Pawel Kryszalowicz stole into space on the right and picked up his colleague on the edge of the box.
The midfielder's first touch was good, but his finish saw the ball thud back off advertising hoardings rather than hit the net.
Dembinski, who at 34 is older than Wronki manager Maciej Skorza, was the man at the heart of most of his side's creative play but he too was wasteful after Rangers had failed to clear a corner and allowed him to get behind them.
Lovenkrands' second goal of the season was the perfect reply but centre-back Marvin Andrews needed to be spot on with his sliding tackle in the box in the 36th minute to stop Marcin Burkhardt latching on to a Dembinski through-ball.
Dembinski picked out skipper Kryszalowicz with a cross from the right but the Poland international striker's header did not have the power to trouble Klos unduly.
Within 10 minutes of the restart Dado Prso had headed home a Gregory Vignal cross from the left but a raised flag instantly ruled that one out.
The Croatian was back in the danger zone within a minute but sent a shot across the box squirting just wide.
Lovenkrands was replaced by Novo in the 56th minute and, after Chris Burke had fired narrowly over, the newcomer made an instant impact by doubling Rangers' advantage to net his fifth goal of the season.
Prso was able to claim a clever assist by backheeling a Vignal delivery from the left into the Spaniard's path and his low drive from the edge of the box had the beating of the goalkeeper to his right.
Luck was with Rangers in the 66th minute when Dembinski crashed a lunging, first time effort back off the crossbar after Kryszalowicz had headed on a corner to unhinge the visitors' defence.
McLeish's side responded with the goals that converted a competent victory into a rout.
Ricksen lashed home from 20 yards after Prso had set him up and, after Jaroslaw Bieniuk had fouled him in the box, Arveladze made no mistake from the penalty spot.
With Thompson having replaced Prso by this point, Arveladze came close to making it five with a shot across goal and just wide.
With a minute left Thompson headed home a Burke cross to make sure he did not miss out on the goal feast.
Rangers sit out the next round of matches before resuming UEFA Cup action at home to Grazer AK on November 25.
